Jeffrey W. Abraham joined the law school in July 2026 as a clinical associate professor of law. He came to Bloomington with over 20 years of experience in intellectual property practice in the Washington, D.C. area, including the last 12 years as an Administrative Patent Judge at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) within the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
At the PTAB, Abraham most recently served as an Acting Vice Chief Administrative Patent Judge and participated in several executive management projects, including implementation of the discretionary review process. As an Administrative Patent Judge at PTAB, Abraham participated in over 100 AIA trials in various technology areas, including chemical, electrical, mechanical, and biological arts, was involved in the Legal Experience and Advancement Program (LEAP), and developed and ran the PTAB Moot Court Competition.
Before joining the PTAB, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, where he focused on intellectual property litigation in Federal District Court and the International Trade Commission across several different technologies. In addition, he has experience in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, consultation with clients to avoid patent infringement, and preparation of patent invalidity and non-infringement opinions.
Abraham earned a J.D. with High Honors from the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Florida Law Review, and he holds a B.A. in chemistry from Cornell University.
