New Teaching Collaborations

Maurer and Purdue: A Collaborative Space Law Course

Profs. Janis and Hedges, in collaboration with Purdue University Professor Karen Marais (Professor of  Aeronautics and Astronautics and Associate Head for Undergraduate Education), taught an innovative seminar on Space Law in Fall 2024 to a combined group of IU Maurer students and upper-level Purdue engineering students.  Prof. Janis delivered content on legal aspects of space activities while Prof. Marais and her students led discussions on the technical aspects of spaceflight.  Maurer and Purdue students worked as teams to analyze challenging discussion problems on issues such as the legal obligations for astronaut rescue, proposals to establish safety zones in conjunction with future lunar surface operations, and many others.  Maurer students also produced research papers on space law topics.

Guest lectures during the semester included:

  • Professor Asaf Lubin - space law and espionage
  • Legal Team from Ursa Major (Colorado-based startup manufacturing rocket propulsion systems - provided practical perspectives on client representation involved in privace sector space activities.)

Support for this ambitious and novel collaboration, the first of its kind between Maurer and Purdue Engineering, was provided by Maurer's Leon Wallace Teaching Innovation Grant

Maurer and Purdue: Teaming up on Innovations!

Another great example of how CIPR is partnering with Purdue on opportunities to collaborate is the relationship Professors Janis and Hedges are building with Professor Beth Hess (Associate Professor of Engineering Practice) and her Mechanical Engineering ME463: Senior Design class.

In the spring 2024 semester, students from Professor Janis' Advanced Patent Law class teamed up with students from Professor Hess' ME463 Senior Design class as part of a unique pilot program.  Meeting with their Purdue counterparts over Zoom, “IU Maurer students introduced Purdue ME students to patent law and Purdue ME students introduced IU Maurer students to the engineering design process, with both learning how the two are intertwined,” noted Professor Hedges, who designed the protocols for the IU/Purdue student interactions.  Professors Hedges and Don Knebel, along with Allison Strong '22 (IP Attorney, Nixon Peabody) and Matthew Spegele '22 (Associate, Faegre Drinker), mentored the IU Maurer student teams.

  • This semester clinic students began working on collaborative projects with four teams of Purdue Mechanical Engineering students on patent aspects of their senior design projects.
  • IP Law Clinic and PatentConnect students presented "IP Aspects of Entrepreneurship" to the following organizations during the fall 2024 semester:
    • Buchta Tech Center (Petersburg, IN) - Presentation made virtually by Vasilios Antonopoulos, Josh Everetts, Hsin-Yun (Cindy) Hsieh, and Devika Maradapu in September.
    • The Mill (Bloomington, IN) - Presentation in person by students Samuel Douthit, Alaya Mathur, Jane Seo, Ananya Mohindra, and Yun (Christine) Chang in November.
  • IP Clinic students Chloe Neal, Zohra Saeedi, Jaide Cummings, and Amelia Taylor attended the Indiana University Athletics NIL Summit event in September at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The students mingled with a large group of student athletes, sharing awareness of our pro bono NIL program which began in 2022.

  • IP Clinic client Jim Ordo is set to receive U.S. patent protection for his novel carwash technology, Carwash Reclaim System, designed to reclaim and re-use wash water.  The system will save up to 20 gallons of fresh water per car or nearly 3 million gallons per year for each carwash location. Mr. Ordo shares that Professor Hedges and the clinic’s law students played a critical role in the process of helping him secure patent protection.

Student Spotlights

Karlie at Cliffs of Moher
Karlie Hinton, 3L

3L Karlie Hinton's IP world travels began with a 1L summer abroad in Thailand with Tilleke & Gibbons through the Stewart Fellows program.  She was excited to apply again for a semester abroad in the Fall 2024, this time at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.  At Trinity, she has focused on EU Intellectual Property Law, taking elective courses in National Security and Privacy law.  She has used the time to travel around Ireland and parts of Europe.  We can't wait to see you back in January, Karlie!

Jeff Greenbaum, 3L

3L Jeffrey Greenbaum presented his paper "When Should Training an AI Model Prevail as Fair Use Under Andy Warhol?" at the Eighth Annual Texas A&M Intellectual Property Scholars Roundtable on November 9th.  Jeff's paper is forthcoming in the University of Oklahoma Law Review.

Kaitlyn Ross, 2L

2L Kaitlyn Ross is using her spare time to inspire Girl Scouts to be inventors and maybe even law students.  For several years, Kaitlyn, herself once a participant in the Girl Scout program, has volunteered her time as youth leader for local Bloomington Scout Troop #01900.  Last summer, Kaitlyn learned about the Girl Scouts' Intellectual Property Patch, which was developed as a joint partnership between the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital (GSCNC) and the USPTO and in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) Education Foundation  She reached out to the organization, began to set up the curriculum and on October 24th, her troop of 9-10 year olds completed activities and steps necessary to earn their IP Patch.  Great job Kaitlyn for sharing IP with the next generation!  Congratulations Troop #01900 for your newest patch!
